“Beautifully presented by a Baroque authority”
Without doubt this is the definitive edition of these Quantz sonatas. Rachel Brown is a leading authority on works of this period and these beautifully presented volumes are bursting with her enthusiasm and scholarship. Each one contains 2 copies of the score for flute and cello, a keyboard part and a reproduction of the facsimile. There is also a wealth of information in her performance notes, covering use of accidentals, rhythm, tempo, ornamentation, articulation and cadenzas. Everything here is just as it should be and every flute player should have a copy!
From the Publisher
It was written as the result of a visit in 1741 to the court of Frederick the Great in Potsdam, where Bach's son Carl Philipp Emanuel had been appointed principal harpsichordist to the king the previous year. It was dedicated to Michael Gabriel Fredersdorf, the king's valet and private secretary, who, like the. Rachel is professor of historical flutes at the Royal College of Music in London. Her thriving class attracts traverso players and keen modern flautists alike, and she also gives classes ornamentation and cadenzas, open to all students.
These exhilarating works were composed for Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, and have remained in his private collection, largely unknown, since the eighteenth century. Now published for the first time, these choicest pieces may, at last, assume their rightful position in the core flute repertoire.

Upper Node
J. S. Bach’s compositions for flute consist of sonatas with basso continuo, sonatas for obbligato harpsichord and flute, and a solo for unaccompanied flute. The genesis and context of these works are uncertain, although they are usually posited to range in date from Bach’s years in Köthen until probably 1741 in the case of bwv1035. Bach’s writing for the instrument is virtuosic and wide ranging in emotional effect—attributes ably demonstrated in the performances under review....
